Billie Joe Armstrong Leads Green Day in SXSW Performace After Rehab Stint

Last night, Green Day appeared at the 2013 South by Southwest (SXSW) music festival fronted by a newly sober Billie Joe Armstrong.

As Green Day ripped through their high-energy set, Billie Joe proclaimed to the crowd.

“This is not a f***** party, this is not a first date, it’s not a bar mitzvah – it’s a celebration!”

It has been widely reported that Billie Joe checked himself into rehab earlier this year after a battle with addiction and a “breakdown” that was rumored to put the future of Green Day at Jeopardy. In a recent Rolling Stone magazine interview, Billie Joe Armstrong recalled a show in Austin, Texas in the late Nineties when he decided to stop worrying about his punk credibility and finally act like a rock & roll star onstage: to give his band and songs the showmanship they deserved in concert. It took liquid courage, he admitted – a step with distant, ultimately disastrous consequences. That was the early ’90s. More recently at the I Heart Radio music festival in Las Vegas, the Green Day front-man suffered a “very public” emotional and physical collapse on stage during Green Day’s performance.

According to reviews from the South By Southwest show last night, Green Day and Billie Joe Armstrong appear to have a bright future. The band and Billie Joe Armstrong were strong, energized and the performance was filled with excitement.
